This is the third book of Ms. Henrie's that I've had the pleasure of reading. I am always astounded by the depth of emotion she is able to put into the story. She's able to help the reader to feel and understand the sense of loss the character feels over a loved one. The joy of finding love again after loss. The unjustified guilt that comes with surviving when another has not. Ms. Henrie shows the horrors of war without the gory details. Even the supporting characters had very natural ways of adding to the emotions of the book. The title says it all. It's all about Hope Rising after pain and loss.I appreciated the flaws in the characters. Evelyn and Joel felt like they could be any friend of mine. Very true to life in their feelings and emotions. I found myself feeling the emotional ups and downs they experienced like I would with any friend.
The description of war torn France in 1918 are vivid. I felt more like I was watching a movie than reading a book because I could see the setting in my mind. The old stone hospital; the cold, wet, muddy front; the ocean side; and the woods all felt so real. The story was like looking into a window to the past. Reading the historical elements was so interesting and added to the setting.
I was touched by the religious elements of Hope Rising. Rediscovering faith in God, trusting He will bring about good in their lives, in spite of trials and heartache. This all added depth to the story, but it didn't feel too much either.
I highly recommend this book. I am sure it's one I will read over and over. Not to mention the cover is simply stunning. Ms. Henrie did a fantastic job on this book!

The Of Love and War series flew in under the radar so to speak. I haven't read much in the way of promotion from the publisher or about the author until recently, but these short little romances have trotted their way to the top of my book list for 2014 beating out some big names! With the first book, we met the Campbell sister, Livy, on the homefront during The Great War. Hope Rising follows Joel through battlefield and field hospital where he meets his best friend's girl, nurse Evelyn Gray. Each of their stories is poignant and heartbreaking as war time sagas usually are. However, where book one focused on life in the States for those fighting at home, book two offers a glimpse at the battles faced on and off the fields of combat.
Hope Rising is one of those stories that starts off fast and dives right in to the romance as well as the heartbreak. Where Hope at Dawn took a while to take off, this story pulled me in right from the get go! As a nurse on the war front, being married is a no-no and being unmarried with child is considered grounds for immediate dismissal. Not wanting to disappoint her family or endanger her unborn baby, Evelyn must find a solution and quickly or put the life she knows in jeopardy. Joel Campbell was severely wounded in the battle that also took the life of Evelyn's fiance and feels responsible for Evelyn and her well-being. Henrie, weaves this story in such a way that is believable and entertaining. Even though it is a romance, it doesn't have that "fluff" feel. It's a pretty dramatic tale, but still remains hopeful and uplifting.
The Of Love and War saga continues with A Hope Remembered in March 2015. In the meantime, the Christmas novella, A Christmas Hope, is now available and is just thing to tide you over through the busy holiday season if you don't have time to read a full-length romance! I for one have really enjoyed this series and am looking forward to more!

Book two in Stacy Henrie’s Of Love and War series, Hope Rising, is about a young nurse, Evelyn Gray that falls in love with a soldier, Ralf, while on leave. After finding out she is pregnant, he says he will come marry her the next time he gets leave. Tragically Ralf is killed in battle before he can marry Evelyn. After hearing this shattering news from Ralf’s best friend Joel, who was wounded in the same battle, Evelyn must decide how to handle the situation. As Joel heals at the hospital, he is drawn to Evelyn. But through their own tragedies, will they be able to trust each other enough to fall in love? I love how Stacy brings her characters to life. Readers will fall in love with not only the characters, but beautiful and intriguing story from page one. Through pain, grief, and sorrow, as well as joy, Stacy’s characters make readers feel what they are feeling and scenarios from the war are brought to life. I would recommend this novel to readers that enjoy historical romance novels that take place during WWI.
