Criminal Terra Elan McVoy Books
Wow, this book. Spectacularly well-written, taking an unlikable protagonist with an unsympathetic point of view and making her believable and worthy of compassion and understanding--so much so that following her journey to growth and maturity is incredibly rewarding. Masterful, taut writing. Absolutely fantastic.

Criminal Terra Elan McVoy Books Reviews
Criminal turned out to be really different than I'd expected. I had assumed the story would start with Nikki being happy with Dee, show how he gradually pulls her into this darker stuff, and then escalate with the murder. I figured the novel would end with Nikki finally giving up Dee and going to the police. But that's not how Criminal is set up. The story starts with the murder and deals mainly with the aftermath. This set-up has its pros and cons it made me feel Nikki's despair, and it let us see what happens later on, but it also made it a bit harder to understand why Nikki won't give Dee up, since we never get to see the two of them together before things went so wrong.
It isn't easy to be in Nikki's head. Seeing her continue to defend Dee, to abandon herself and everyone around her to do exactly what Dee tells her, to basically wreck everything for her obsession with Dee... it gets frustrating. But Nikki's character is so well done that I sympathized with her despite her flaws. Her life leading up to this point has been rough, to say the least, and it's easy to understand why she would cling on to Dee, when so many other people have abandoned her. Being inside Nikki's head is harrowing, emotional, and sometimes painful, but I loved it. The cast of secondary characters isn't too complex or lovable (except for Bird, of course), but they do add a lot to the story.
Like I said earlier, the downfall of starting this story with the crime is that we don't get to know what Dee and Nikki were like before things went so wrong. In any story about an unhealthy relationship, I think it's important to show both the problematic parts and the good moments so that the reader can understand why the victim loves their partner so much and won't give them up. And that was missing in Criminal. Throughout the novel, I felt nothing but hatred towards Dee, what he puts Nikki through and how he treats her. I wish we had gotten some more insight into Dee as a person, to find out about his background and understand how he came to be this monster of a person. Of course it's important to show that his actions are completely unacceptable, but I still wish his character had been more complex so we could have understood him and his relationship with Nikki a bit better.
The prison setting is really well done. I can't judge how realistic it is (and don't want to!), but it definitely felt real. I loved reading about all those details that you don't really hear about, and it was great to see how Nikki's relationships with the other inmates develop.
Criminal is very different from Terra Elan McVoy's previous books. I loved her light, entertaining reads, but she does this darker story really well too. Criminal is a unique, gritty novel, and while it's a hard read, it's definitely worth it. I can't wait to read Terra Elan McVoy's newest, In Deep!
When I first started this book I was very unsure. I felt the passion and obsession that Nikki had for Dee and I really liked that aspect. And I desperately wanted to know what Dee had done and what would happen to Nikki. But mostly what I felt was rage at Nikki. She was so naive and whiney and just kind of annoying.
And the more the story unfolded the more and more annoying Nikki became to me. And even when she stepped up and finally made a decision I was annoyed at her. And that's when I realized that I really cared about Nikki. Even though I can't relate with being so obsessed with someone I would go along with him like Nikki did, I felt for Nikki and I wanted Nikki to be ok. My annoyance came out of love.
This book actually reminded me a lot of After, another book I loved, but had a main character that drove me up the wall. I thought of this comparison pretty early on, but the more I read the more and more I thought it was the perfect comparison. The books have a similar story and feel, but they're both unique in their own ways.
Anyway, back to more things I liked about this book. I think this might be one of the more extreme cases of personal growth I've ever read in a book, but I found it to be completely realistic. While the Nikki at the end of the story still wasn't perfect, she really grew and matured and I loved seeing that transformation.
I've searched my memory to find something not necessarily negative, but some kind of criticism about the book, but I'm at a loss. I wish we knew where the story was set (maybe that was said at the beginning but I just missed it?) and I wish the author had described the people and the settings a little more because I like to have really clear visuals when I read, but really those are minor things.
Bottom Line Nikki drove me nuts and for a while I was really unsure whether I would be able to finish this one given her naivety, but I couldn't be happier that I stuck with it. This book features one of the more drastic characters transformations I've come across, but amazingly I found it to be completely realistic. I loved watching Nikki grow and come into her own and I've already made up my own story for what happens to Nikki after the book ends.
A whole lot of language in it. A powerful story. Showing us that love or many other things can blind us and hold you back from what you truly want.
Nick pissed me off because she was so ignorant!! I don't think she had a mind of her own. Other than that the book came in good condition and was a quick read.
Well written but the story goes nowhere. I did not care enough for the characters and the ending was abruptw
I wasn't sure I was liking this as I started it. The main character is sooooo dumb. But she grew on me. I was happy to see her evolve. She felt real and I could see someone like her being victimized like she was.
