This book is one of the best I have read on compassionate leadership. In today’s fast-paced world, it is easy to find ourselves worrying far more about outcomes of projects, quarterly goals, and hitting our numbers than having consideration for something far more valuable than that: people.

Barry does a really good job in this engaging book to help everyone see the value of leaders investing in relationships first, going so far as to reiterate numerous times. Perhaps he said it best in the introduction, “success is not about more money or even more authority. It’s really about influence.” Throughout the book Barry continues to define what that influence is and how important it is to a leader’s success.

Even though I have felt that I understood the value of people and the importance of relationship and influence for some time, I had to get real with myself as I read through the pages of this book, realizing that I am failing at this. At one point Barry gives a scenario with the conclusion that if this scenario isn’t happening, “then there is a pretty good chance your employees would tell me that you are perpetually busy and don’t have time for them.” It was in reading this that I realized how I had made it much worse, as it was far more likely that I would hear my employees regularly say, “I know how busy you are ...”. This hesitation to approach me because of my busyness was a strong indicator that I was not putting relationships and influence first.

I have already begun changing my leadership style due to Barry’s advice, and I look forward to building on this as I move forward and give these five gifts of leadership to those I’m privileged to call my team.

Excellent read!
Great book very applicable to today's leadership challenges
Barry does not use any management cliches or lingo to get his message across. He uses plain, simple, earnest and sincere language that's obviously coming straight from his heart.

I will definitely read and reread this book several times. I do hope that an audiobook version of this book is issued before long

How I wish I could go back in time and have this book in hand to give to a few previous supervisors who didn't know how to lead, but knew well how to undermine and belittle thinking this proved their leadership.

True leadership comes from building up your relationships with your team, not bullying them -- this is the epitome of what Banther describes in his book, "A Leader's Gift". Barry Banther discusses the mistakes he made as a young leader and shows you the result...he goes on to describe how once he realized the error of his ways how he went on to improving his communication with his team. It is no wonder he is such a sought after business consultant and speaker. He gives you the tools...its up to you to use them!

The principles even apply to your home life! Buy this book and apply the principles to your own life, and you will become better leader...manager...supervisor...parent...spouse. Essentially, become a better you!
Barry had touched at the very core of leadership. Everyone wants to be loved, accepted, belong and to matter. The workplace probably won't show much love on the surface. When leaders embrace the principles in this book, it will be a love relationship with the employees. Most managers get compliance by using a hammer. Barry will teach you how to get buy-in on all levels. When people buy-in, it is because they feel needed (loved?), accepted by the boss and co-workers, that they are part of the success of the organization and that they matter!

Every manager needs to read this book and then get it for those who report to them. Barry, you hit a home run with this book!
